A Mother’s Day Gift Guide Supporting Small Businesses

I can’t imagine any of us thought we’d be celebrating Mother’s Day like this…socially distanced from our loved ones, in the middle of a full-fledged pandemic. It’s certainly hard to celebrate milestones when we can’t gather together or hug one another. But we can still show our moms and the mother figures in our lives the love we feel for them with a special gift.

Because things are pretty dire right now for a lot of people, I wanted to try to help others, even in a small way. So for this mother’s day gift guide, I want to support small businesses, so all of my gift recommendations are from smaller companies that are doing their best to stay in business during this unprecedented time.

When we’re stuck at home, it might feel like we can’t do much, but the little things count. How cool would it be if you could find a gift for your mom that she loves while at the same time supporting small businesses and the hardworking people behind them?

That’s a win-win in my book, so let’s get to it!

Mila and Me

I think tie-dyed loungewear has become the de facto uniform of this pandemic. And I get it. Bright, fun colors, in a fun, tie-dyed pattern are cheerful! Mila and Me, a small, family-run business is getting it right with their matching tie-dyed sweatshirts and socks sets. Even better, they are donating a portion of their proceeds to Covid-19 relief efforts. So cheer mom up with a tie-dyed sweatshirt she can wear around the house.

And, P.S., When we can travel again, I’ll be getting one of these sweatshirts to wear on my long haul flights!

Did somebody say chocolate? Well, how about chocolate-covered pretzels? You can get that and more at Fatty Sundays. Founded by 3 sisters (with some help from their parents), I’m happy to support this small Brooklyn based business that is getting it right with their salty and sweet confections. Personally, my favorite is the DIY chocolate covered pretzel kit. It’s a great way for the entire family to celebrate Mother’s Day with a fun project that has a delicious outcome.

Ellis James Designs

Is the mom in your life a frequent traveler? If so, this Mother’s Day, give her a gift she can really use – a toiletry, makeup, or jewelry organizer that will easily fit all of her essentials. Ellis James Designs, a small business created by women, for women, has stylish organizers for all of mom’s needs. And right now they are having a 50% off sale!

Let’s be honest. Nobody is sleeping well these days. Even if we’re not reading the news all the time, the constant threat of this pandemic has us all on edge. So for all the moms out there, (who are mostly on triple duty right now between work, home-schooling, and housework) give her something that will really help to ease her anxiety and make her feel better. Highline Wellness is a small business that has a range of natural and affordable CBD products that provide peace of mind. Personally, I recommend the CBD night gummies and CBD Immunity gummies to help all the moms out there (and the rest of us!) get through this pandemic.

I love Brooklinen’s classic core sheet set in the color steel

Brooklinen

Home is where…we all are now, for better or for worse! So we might as well make the best of it, and make mom comfy too. A great way to do this is with an upgrade of bed linens. I’ve been using Brooklinen sheets for over a year now and I love them. They feel like an indulgence with no downside. And right now, this small, Brooklyn based company is having a sale, so get to it!

Things To do - Rooftop Reds Vineyard in Brooklyn

My husband and I enjoying a spring evening at Rooftop Reds

Rooftop Reds

I want to do as much as I can to support local businesses, especially ones where I live. Rooftop Reds is one of those businesses. Their concept – a rooftop vineyard in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, is pretty unique. It’s actually a place my husband and I enjoyed frequently before the lockdown started.

The bad news is we can’t hang out on their rooftop right now. The good news is they are still selling wine, and lots of great food and wine packages, on their website. And right now, they have some pretty great mother’s day gifts, so if the mom in your life is a foodie and enjoys the occasional glass of wine, (and let’s be honest, who isn’t enjoying a glass of wine these days!?) then this is the perfect gift. And if you’re local to Brooklyn too, they are offering free delivery!

Siblings

I love this small business, run by a brother and sister team, (hence the name siblings!) for two reasons. First, I love candles. Second, the company, Siblings has come up with a better and more sustainable way of doing candles. This means you get to keep lighting candles in your home and feel good about it at the same time. So if the mom in your life loves a stylish and sustainable, scented candle, this is the gift for her.

Support Small Businesses Beyond Mother’s Day

Remember, we can keep supporting small businesses beyond Mother’s Day. Many of the gifts I mentioned above I actually want for myself, LOL!

Given the state of the economy right now, I know many of us are being cautious about any purchases we make. That said, I think we can make thoughtful choices, supporting hardworking people and small businesses that are focused on quality, sustainability, and affordable products.

In that vein, I hope you find this Mother’s Day gift guide helpful.

Stay safe, and healthy, and happy Mother’s Day to all the mommas out there!
