Whether you prefer dark and moody or airy and bright, some simple changes can go a long way in creating bedroom bliss and making the room where you sleep feel more cozy and tranquil. And it doesn’t have to mean a full-on, Marie Kondo style decluttering either. Just try a few of these simple tricks and you’ll be on your way to bedroom bliss. To help me out with these bedroom hacks, I’ve enlisted two of my friends who are successful interior designers, to get their tips on creating a bedroom retreat you won’t want to leave.

Color and Mood
When it comes to bedroom bliss, do you prefer dark and moody or airy and bright? Both options work but there are a few guidelines to follow.
Jacquelyn Moore Hill, the founder and owner of Jacquelyn Moore Hill Designs based in Brooklyn prefers calming colors on the walls. “I find a white bedroom too sterile. My favorite bedroom wall color is Dimity by Farrow & Ball. It’s just enough rose. I’ve painted 3 bedrooms this color.”
Claudia Kalis, of Claudia Kalis Designs based in Manhattan, prefers dark, moody walls which can have a cozy, enveloping effect. She suggests a color palette of black, dark grey, navy, or dark greens.
Bed Linens Help Create Bedroom Bliss
Bed linens are such an important part of creating bedroom bliss and yet they often get overlooked. Choosing the right linens not only adds an aesthetic appeal to the room but can benefit our sleep and health as well.

For Claudia, “It’s all about the hotel room feeling, crisp white sheets and beautiful throws. However, don’t over clutter with too many pillows because it will be too much hard work to get into your bed at night!”
Jacquelyn has a similar sentiment. “Have a special, inviting duvet and sheet set that makes you happy just looking at it. However, if it’s a print, make sure it doesn’t overwhelm whatever you have on the walls and window treatment.”
When it comes to fabric options for your bed linens, cotton is the most common choice, and for good reason. It’s a durable, breathable, and soft fabric that is quite affordable and easy to clean. When colder weather hits, try flannel, another form of cotton, for a cozy feel. And for those of you who want to splurge on something more luxurious, silk is a cool and sensuous fabric that’s also naturally hypoallergenic.
My go-to is the Luxe Sateen sheets from Brooklinen. My husband and I love these sheets so much we have 3 sets!
Nightstands and Bedside Lamps
There are so many options when it comes to choosing nightstands and bedside lamps, it can lead to decision fatigue! Whatever your style preference, keep these basic guidelines in mind.
Both Claudia and Jacquelyn agree that bedside sconces are a good way to add low task lighting to the room. In addition, Claudia likes the use of sconces or pendant lights rather than table lamps, to keep the nightstands more clutter-free.
When it comes to choosing a nightstand, Jacquelyn recommends finding a piece that’s attractive as well as functional. And if you’re single, you don’t need to have 2 side tables or 2 of the same tables. You can mix and match, and have a longer one on your side of the bed if that is what fits your needs.
Stick with Minimal Decoration
For the overall feeling of your bedroom, keep this in mind: less is more. Too much clutter can actually impact your mental state and create anxiety. This doesn’t mean you have to take up Marie Kondo’s extreme version of decluttering but you do want to try to create a space that’s as relaxing as possible. Not only will it create a more pleasing design aesthetic, but it will create a better environment in which you can relax and fall asleep.
Jacquelyn recently did her own bedroom refresh. She recommends removing all bookshelves and office equipment. “I usually live with a ton of books and magazines in my bedroom for inspiration, but I feel like all of that stuff gives off its own energy and causes additional clutter, so I nixed it this time around.”
Claudia practices what she preaches with a completely clutter-free bedroom. (Talk about bedroom goals!) She recommends dimmable light and just a few art pieces that inspire positive feelings. And both agree that blackout shades or curtains are a great investment for a good night’s sleep.
The TV Debate
I have a very strong opinion about this. When my sister and I were growing up, my parents refused to let us have a TV in our bedrooms. At the time, it felt like a travesty. Now, I can’t thank them enough for enforcing that rule, because studies have shown that it can be detrimental to sleep quality and duration. And this goes for our smaller electronic devices as well.
Jacquelyn and Claudia have similar opinions on the matter. Claudia’s rule is no TV or smartphones in the bedroom. She adds that if you need an alarm, use an old school one, which can enhance your space with another fun design detail. When Jacquelyn completed her bedroom refresh a few weeks ago, she removed the TV. Since then, she said her overall sleep cycle has dramatically improved.
