Wow.
Even though many of us are still in some form of lockdown, the month of May flew by!
It’s strange to still be in the middle of this pandemic with summer almost upon us. So many rituals of the season that we love will be different this year.
I’m not quite sure how this summer will turn out, but right now, I’m trying to focus on the day-to-day, and enjoy the simple pleasures in life that are making me quite happy. (We have to find the silver lining somewhere, right?)
So with that in mind, keep reading to find out everything I recommend in the monthly round-up for May.

The Monthly Round-Up: May 2020
Flowers are so simple and yet they add so much joy. Don’t you think?
One thing my husband and I are loving right now is the rose bushes we inherited in our backyard. Now that they are blooming riotously, we’ve snipped a few to put in bud vases around the house.
If you don’t have a yard or easy access to fresh flowers, don’t fret. You can have vibrant, indoor plants delivered to your door with Bloomscape. Plants are an affordable and easy way to spruce up your interiors, and they last a lot longer than flowers. (Just remember to water them!)
Fire up the grill!
Summer also reminds me of grilling. Normally, my husband and I love to host BBQs. (You can read about all of my summer BBQ tips here.) We probably won’t be doing much of that this summer, but we’ll still enjoy using our grill.
Some of the recipes we have on repeat right now include this Grilled vegetable recipe from the New York Times and this all-purpose spice rub. The great thing about this seasoning is you can make a big batch that will last for a few weeks.
Don’t have a BBQ or outdoor grill? No worries. Just get a grill pan that you can use on any stovetop and you’ll be charring meat and veggies in no time.
Summer Dresses Anyone?
What’s your de facto wardrobe for summer? Mine is a summer dress. A few dresses, to be precise. Here are some of the ones on my radar right now (and already in my closet!).
The sherbert colored dress I’m wearing above is on sale now.
I’m also loving this option and this one.
Get outdoors!
While larger gatherings are still prohibited in many places, we can still enjoy getting outdoors. So this May (and beyond in 2020), I’m putting picnics in the park on my list. How cute is this picnic basket which comes with everything you need?
Now that the weather is getting warmer, it’s a great time to get some outdoor exercise. My go-to is running. In fact, I wrote an entire post about why I love running (and why you might too).
If you’re new to running, now is a great time to start. The beauty of this sport is that you literally need only one thing to get started – a solid pair of running sneakers. I always get my sneakers at Jack Rabbit. Receive 10% OFF your next order when you sign up for E-mails at JackRabbit.com!
Plan a (safe) summer vacation
Are you hoping that you might be able to take some kind of vacation this summer? If so, you’re not alone. Many people are going stir crazy at this point and hoping for a change of scenery.
The good news is that there are ways you can take a safe vacation during this pandemic that is also mindful of those around you.
I highly recommend staying somewhat local and making your summer vacation a road trip. (Check out this post for 5 road trip destinations easily accessible from New York City.) Also, consider renting a home on Vrbo or Airbnb where you can pretty much stay put, rather than a hotel where you’re likely to run into other people.
As for staying mindful of others while on vacation? Here are a few tips:
- Bring most of your groceries from where you live rather than depleting the supply where you’re visiting.
- Make sure local hiking trails and beaches aren’t overrun before heading out for some fresh air.
- Consider giving back to the community you’re visiting. Order takeout from the local restaurants and donate money to the local beaches, parks, and outdoor recreational areas.
Are You Ready to Enjoy the Little Things in May 2020?
I hope you found this monthly round-up for May 2020 helpful!
When it feels like the world is falling apart and we can’t plan for the future, we can feel a bit lost and hopeless. I know I’ve certainly felt this way.
My goal right now is to share small, actionable things you can do to feel better about life.
So whether that’s wearing a pretty summer dress, picking roses from our garden, cooking a tasty recipe, or getting on your 100th zoom call with friends, (LOL), I’m here for it! I hope you are too because it’s these little moments that make up our lives. So let’s appreciate them, right?
Stay safe and stay healthy. And remember, we’re all in this together!
