If there’s one thing I love to do, it’s gathering with friends for a leisurely weekend brunch. And there’s no shortage of great spots in Brooklyn to do just that.
Plus, given that the world seems to be on lockdown right now because of the Coronavirus and people aren’t traveling far from home, I figured now would be a good time to share my favorite, local brunch spots in Brooklyn.
A quick note – these brunch spots in Brooklyn are not the new, uber-trendy, can’t miss restaurants of the season. (That’s What Eater NY and Brunch Boys are for!) These are the neighborhood cafes that I’ve been frequenting for years, for good reason. They all exude charm, a quintessentially welcoming vibe, and of course, most importantly, great food!
So if you’re ready to get a local’s perspective on some of the best brunch spots in Brooklyn, keep reading.

My Favorite Brunch Spots in Brooklyn
Sisters in Fort Greene
One of my favorite spots for brunch in Brooklyn is Sisters in Fort Greene. What’s most impressive about this restaurant is the light-filled space, thanks to a giant skylight in its front room. I love the Bohemian vibe here and the architectural bar is a show stopper. Personally, I love cozying up at the bar for brunch. They make a fantastic bloody mary and their menu includes all the classics plus some outliers like a fried green tomato sandwich.
Café Mogador in Williamsburg
I seriously think I could eat at Café Mogador every day. I’m not kidding. Between the bohemian, Morocco meets the Mediterranean vibe and the quirky but friendly staff, I feel at home every time I come here. But what really keeps me coming back is the food. Is there such a thing as middle eastern comfort food? If so, they’ve got it down. Whether you come for brunch or dinner, you won’t be disappointed. From the various mezze you can order for appetizers, which come with perfectly puffed up pieces of warm pita bread, to the various lamb and chicken tagines, you won’t leave hungry. And they also have an impressive list of cocktails, including my hubby’s favorite, the Gold Rush, and mine, the Rosemary Spritz.
Building on Bond in Boerum Hill
A truly local joint, Building on Bond is the kind of restaurant every neighborhood deserves. The unpretentious staff and eclectic décor are all a part of what creates a welcoming vibe here. But it’s the consistent comfort food that keeps me coming back for more.
Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t share some of my insider knowledge with you since I am a Brooklynite. Building on Bond also has a sister bar, called Robert. This hidden away spot feels like a glamourous speakeasy and the cocktails are legit. This spot is great for a date or a rendezvous with a friend or two.
Cafe Madeline in Ditmas Park
Ok, I’ll admit, Cafe Madeline is a bit like a hole-in-the-wall joint, but the food is outstanding. That’s why my husband and I keep coming back. From the breakfast sandwiches and brekkie bowls to the inventive salads, smoothies and every kind of latte you could imagine, everything here is delicious. Even the healthy options feel decadent because the dishes are packed with so many flavorful and colorful ingredients. My favorites on the menu are the Sunny Sunflower Salad and the Cheddar Scallion Bowl. And my husband gets the Croissant Burger every time.
James Restaurant in Prospect Heights
If you’re in the mood for a higher-end brunch experience, (this is the spot I always bring my parents too), come to James. Located on a nondescript corner in Prospect Hill, this restaurant has been a mainstay for locals since the day it opened. From the potted plants outside to the modern-vintage decor inside, James has a quintessential Brooklyn vibe. And the food is among the best in the borough. Their seasonal, farm-to-table fare, along with inventive cocktails are comforting and elevated all at once.
Buttermilk Channel in Carroll Gardens
Buttermilk Channel is another neighborhood spot beloved by locals and tourists alike. However, this means it gets quite the crowd for weekend brunch. The restaurant doesn’t take reservations for brunch and won’t seat parties larger than 8, but that said, it’s worth the wait. The comfort food is always delicious and filling. Whatever you order, I highly recommend getting the walnut sticky buns to share. They are divine!
