5 Wellness Tips & Trends That Have Improved My Life

wellness tips include a nutritious morning smoothie

1. A Morning Smoothie

I know that morning smoothies are very on-trend right now, and pictures of them probably swamp your Instagram feeds. (I’ve been guilty of snapping a photo or two myself!) But since I incorporated this wellness tip into my life, making a morning smoothie with nutritional supplements, I rarely get sick. (Of course, wearing a mask all the time now helps with this too!)

This is a big deal for me because I have a weak immune system. Normally, when winter rolls around, I get at least two or three colds a season. I’m also prone to respiratory infections that are only treatable with antibiotics. This past year, I haven’t been sick once! The biggest change I’ve made to my lifestyle is my diet, so I truly believe the supplements and nutrition I’m adding to my morning smoothie are helping me stay healthy.

I have a go-to recipe that I use on most days. Feel free to add other supplements to this recipe that you already like and use. That can include anything from turmeric and spirulina to coconut oil and maca powder. If you’re just starting out with making a smoothie, you’ll need to experiment and figure out what works best for you. And of course, don’t forget that you want it to taste good!

2. Essential Oils

Another wellness tip I picked up is the daily use of essential oils. I worked with a holistic health coach and essential oils educator to figure out the regimen that was right for me. I admit, at first I was skeptical. What could these oils really do for me? But as soon as I started using them, I was hooked.

There are three ways to use essential oils: aromatically, either by diffusing them or sniffing the oils in their purest form, topically (make sure to dilute the oils with coconut or jojoba oil if they aren’t diluted already), and ingesting them in the form of a supplement. If you are using them as a supplement, do your research before ingesting oils, because many brands come with harmful fillers.

Doterra Oils is the brand I have been using, and I only use them aromatically. And this is the diffuser I use and love. There’s also a great deal now on Amazon for a diffuser with a set of 10 starter oils.

In general, citrus oils are uplifting and great for mood management. Melaleuca is great for skin repair and can be applied to bruises, cuts or blemishes. It can also be applied to the chest for purifying the airways of the lungs. Lavender is soothing and can relieve anxiety. Peppermint is another mood lifter and is also good for digesting.

Personally, I’ve incorporated essential oils into my daily routine by using the Serenity blend in my diffuser at night. I put 3 drops in the water and turn it on 30 minutes for bed. I am a restless sleeper but this has improved my sleep patterns and reduced my anxiety at night. Now when I turn on my diffuser, I know it’s time to wind things down and get ready for bed. It’s become my favorite bedtime ritual!

3. The Power of Journaling

I have always kept a diary. But in the past, it was very inconsistent. I would go months between journal entries. While I did feel the therapeutic effects of journaling when I did it, I wanted to see what would happen if I made this wellness tip a more consistent habit. Now that I have been journaling every morning, I’ve seen a huge difference in my mood, attitude, and general outlook on life.

Before you say, “I don’t have time to fit daily journal writing into my schedule,” hear me out. This is a powerful tool that can affect change in our lives. The book, Search Inside Yourself, by Chade-Meng Tan, cites a study by Stefanie Spera, Eric Buhrfeind, and James Pennebaker.  In this study, they had a group of laid-off professionals write to themselves about their feelings for five consecutive days, twenty minutes each day. After 8 months, 68.4% of the group who journaled found jobs versus 27.3 percent from the non-writing control group. That’s a staggering difference!

If you’re not sure where to start, Tim Ferris has a great exercise, the 5-minute journal. You literally write down 3 answers to 5 questions every day, and that’s it. Or you can do the gratitude journal, which is what I now do. It’s simple. You give 3 answers to the following 3 prompts:

  1. Today I’m grateful for…
  2. What would make today great?
  3. Daily affirmations

I know we are all busy, but giving yourself 5 extra minutes in the morning to complete this exercise will make a difference in not only how you feel the rest of the day, but in general. But don’t take my word for it! Try the exercise for one week and see what happens.

This is the latest journal I’m using. It’s simple but beautiful and motivates me to journal every day!

4. Natural Skincare Products

Ever since I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, (You can read more about my story here,) I’ve been very careful about what skincare products I use. My skin is extremely sensitive, so I always try to find organic products that have as many natural ingredients as possible.

I was thrilled when a friend recently introduced me to Sweetwater Labs. Based in NYC, the company’s entire organic skincare line is non-GMO, vegan, and free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. I’ve been using some of their products all winter long, and my skin has never felt more hydrated. Even better, I’ve had no irritation, breakouts, or rashes.

La Roche-Posay- ACD

Typically, I use the complete Vitamin Face Serum and the Rose Face Oil. I mix them together and apply to my face in the morning before my daily moisturizer and at night before my night cream. The Miracle Healing Salve has also been a game-changer for my hands, which normally gets extremely dry in the wintertime.

I also love the clean beauty products that Sephora has been producing and selling. My favorites include this Vitamin C Serum and the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask.

5. CBD Oil

Another wellness trend you might have heard of is CBD (Cannabidiol) hemp oil. Don’t get too excited, this oil won’t get you high! Unlike marijuana, which is made from plants with high concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD oil is made from high CBD, low THC plants. That means the oil only has trace amounts of THC, and it’s non-psychoactive. Now that we got that out of the way, (LOL) I can tell you why I’ve started using CBD oil and love it!

As I mentioned above, I’m a very light sleeper. Even on days when I drink little to no caffeine, I still spend hours tossing and turning, praying for sleep. I don’t want to rely on pharmaceuticals, so I’ve been experimenting with natural remedies. The essential oil diffuser I mentioned above has been super helpful. But I also started using Equilibria’s CBD oil to see if it would also make a difference. It’s been a game-changer for me. I am falling asleep faster, and now only wake up once or twice a night versus multiple times.

Equilibria offers a few different products for ingesting CBD oil, including soft gels and the actual oil. I use both as a part of my daily CBD regimen. The best way to use the oil is to put a few drops under your tongue and hold for 60 seconds, and then swallow. This allows for fast absorption into your bloodstream. (If you’re interested in trying Equilibria’s products, use the code Letsbemerry for 15% off your first order!)

CBD oil works at the cellular level, and the health benefits go way beyond improving sleep. The oil also enhances your immune system, giving the body a better ability to fight and resist disease, and assists in repairing the body and mind. I’m taking it for my sleep but the extra benefits are a great bonus.
